Emily Smolenaars

~ Social Worker & Counsellor ~

Are you coping on the outside but feeling worn down underneath?

Hi, I’m Emily, a social worker and member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), with 8 years’ experience supporting teenagers, adults and parents.

You might be struggling with anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, low mood or just feeling a bit lost. Maybe you’re wanting to build confidence, finding a relationship hard to work through, feeling dysregulated a lot of the time, or adjusting to life as a new mum. These are the things I help people with most.

As a social worker I look at the whole picture: your health, your thoughts and feelings, and the people and environment around you. Understanding how these fit together helps us make sense of where you are now and what will actually help.

We’ll set goals together and work towards them at your pace. My approach is attachment-informed, strengths-based and trauma-informed, and I draw on ACT, DBT, CBT and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), along with psychoeducation (understanding what’s going on for you and why).

Sessions can also bring in creativity or something you enjoy doing, where it suits. This works especially well for teens, or for anyone who finds an office or face-to-face talk therapy a bit intimidating.

Teens
I support teens with all of the above, as well as school refusal. Where appropriate, I also offer support to parents, guided by what they’re noticing at home, so they feel more confident helping their teen.

NDIS
I work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants under Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living. Support can include emotional regulation, building resilience, interpersonal skills, conflict resolution, self-advocacy, problem solving, psychoeducation and crisis planning.
